Fast track for realignment of busy Cashmere intersection A PLAN to improve a Cashmere intersection for safety reasons is being fast tracked. The proposal is to install traffic lights and realign the intersection of Cashmere, Hoon Hay and Worsleys Rds with work beginning in May. The upgrades have been fast tracked by the city council due to wider safety concerns. “This project was brought forward by city council due to community concerns around safety for drivers, pedestrians Aaron and cyclists Haymes at this intersection,” city council transport operations manager Aaron Haymes said. The intersection serves as the entrance to the Christchurch Adventure Park and the new Cashmere Estate subdivision. Mr Haymes said the intersection had experienced a surge in use when the adventure park opened. He said high numbers were also expected to resume when the park re-opened. “We recognise that this area

has had a huge increase in traffic due to the Adventure Park, and we need to act quickly to make it safe for all road users,” Mr Haymes said. The improvements include the installation of traffic lights, two new pedestrian crossings, the relocation of a bus stop, and construction of speed humps on Worsleys Rd, near the Hurunui St intersection. The consultation, which the public can submit via the city council’s website, proposes two options. The only difference relates to car parking on Cashmere Rd. Due to the additional road width required for traffic at the intersection, there is not enough road space to retain on street car parking on both sides of Cashmere Rd, Mr Haymes said. “The main difference in the consultation options relates to car parking and whether parking in the vicinity of the Cracroft Shopping Centre is provided on the north or the south side of the road,” he said. There will be a drop-in session on August 14 between 5 and 7pm at Silverbacks Café in the Cracroft Shopping Centre.

IF YOU are an up-and-coming young league or union player the world is your oyster. More and more of the province’s young oval ball talent is being picked up by big spending league clubs and rugby franchises seeking to stock up their ranks for the future. On page 8 today, we reveal 17-year-old Linwood Keas league centre Graeme Patu-Vaega’au will move to Auckland at the end of the year after signing a three-year contract with the Warriors. The NRL clubs and Super Rugby franchises have a wealth of talent to choose from but it takes a special kind of player to make it to the top. Let’s hope Patu-Vaega’au is one of a new breed to take the Warriors forward when he hits the top grade in two or three years. – Barry Clarke

News Work on hub to begin in November A COMMUNITY centre will return to the heart of Woolston with construction beginning in November. Plans for the new Woolston Community Facility on Ferry Rd include a nod to the distinctive brick of the former Woolston Community Library which once occupied the site. An artist’s impression of the new facility shows the community’s desire Selena for brick and Robertson timber in the building is at the forefront of the design process. City council project manager Selena Robertson said the new facility would restore a focal point for the Woolston community. “We can’t wait to begin work on this new facility later this year and bring a community hub back to the village,” she said. “We have had two rounds of public consultation seeking comments about what should be included in the building, how community groups want to use it and a preference of materials

for the exterior – brick and timber were the favoured options,” she said. “We feel like we have a great idea of what this community needs from the facility.” The project is expected to be completed by June next year. The building would include a public toilet, the volunteer library, a small meeting room and a hall for community groups to use. The former library was badly

damaged in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes, but the site was brought back to life through a transitional project last year. Children from local schools decorated large planter boxes and created decorative tiles for the site. The detailed design of the new facility is currently under way by the design team, which is made up of Ignite Architects and TM Consultants. Sally Buck, chair-

In Brief RAPAKI RD NO PARKING The city council will begin consultation on August 7 over whether to install no parking restrictions on parts of Rapaki Rd and Vernon Tce to improve sight lines for motorists. After the feedback is received, a proposal would go to the Spreydon-Cashmere Community Board in October for a decision. Work could begin in November. A drop-in session will be held at the Scout Den, Centaurus Rd, Cashmere, on August 14, 4.30-6pm. PUPILS BEHIND PLAY AREA DESIGN Te Waka Unua School pupils have helped design a new playground for Woolston Park. The city council wants to build a playground next to the school and remove the old one. The pupils have consulted with five pre-schools to come up with suggestions for the new equipment and layout. The plan includes a swing-set, a 4m spinning climbing tower, a nature obstacle course, a seat, and a connecting path through a new gate to the school. Consultation will begin at the end of September, with construction planned for April.

Getting active for health JACKIE HOULE is a changed woman compared to six months ago. Suffering from social anxiety, diabetes and struggling to come to terms with the death of her sister seven years ago, Ms Houle, who lives in New Brighton, was at a crossroads as she went to her doctor’s office. A brave decision to try the green prescription’s eight-week Be Active programme for people who want to increase their level of physical activity, has Ms Houle spending more time on her newly-purchased exercise cycle than her couch. Participants in the programme try out a range of activities such as aqua jogging, gym, sports and dance. They are supported by Sport Canterbury staff and discuss motivation, healthy eating and managing stress – topics that support a healthy lifestyle “I’ve lost 22 pounds (10kg), the panic attacks that I used to suffer, particularly in social situations, are not nearly as bad and my blood sugar levels have dropped. I’ve even purchased an exercycle which I definitely wouldn’t have done prior to the (Be Active) programme,” she said. Ms Houle, who moved from her native Canada 11 years ago

to be with her partner, says her sister’s death had added to her stress. She has not been back to Canada since the tragedy but thanks to her progress over the past nine months, she is planning a trip back home next year. “That’s all been part of it,” she said: “Losing my sister made me really depressed for a very long time; we were very close. I’ve learnt a lot about myself and my health and received so

much support. I’m glad I took the chance and signed up for the programme.” The Be Active programme begins this week in Aranui, Lincoln, Spreydon and Bishopdale. Ms Houle encouraged anyone to give it a go regardless of fitness level, age or health issues. People can refer themselves into the programme or talk to their GP about a green prescription.

Woolston Cut dredge plan to alleviate flood risk By Bridget Rutherford A $2.3 million project to dredge the Woolston Cut of silt and liquefaction will be done so it continues to provide effective flood remediation. City council land drainage manager Keith Davison said the cut was about 50 per cent full of silt and liquefaction. But he said that did not impact how it operated during the recent flooding that began on July 21. “For this to continue to operate effectively it is necessary to maintain capacity Keith Davison by dredging from time to time,” Mr Davison said. The cut was built in the 1980s to prevent flooding in the lower Heathcote River area, and for other catchment-wide improvements, such as the upper Heathcote detention basins. Water from the Heathcote flows into the cut, which can then be opened during floods using the tidal barrage. Mr Davison said it had never been dredged. He said the recent flooding was unlikely to have an impact on the project timings and costs.

“The flooding does highlight to everyone how important it is to have an effective and fully operational land drainage and stormwater network and it is important that the cut and barrage remain operational.” He said the tidal barrage would have helped flood protection by opening and providing additional downstream capacity. “As I understand it the current silt levels in the cut will not have impacted upon flooding as the original design always envisaged and allowed for reasonable levels of silt build-up,” he said. “Having said this, current silt levels have now reached a point where it would be good practice to dredge as further build-up could start to begin to risk impacting upon operation.” He said city council staff were now seeking funding approval for the project. If it was granted for the current financial year, the work could start in October, he said. As part of the project, the footpath earthquake repairs at Staunton Esplanade Reserve would be delayed, as heavy machinery would need to go through. The footpath repairs are likely to take place early next year.

SIMPLICITY IS the key to Gladys Hanson’s longevity. Mrs Hanson turned 108 on July 22. She credits her long life span to leading a simple life and spending time outdoors. The Ultimate Care Rose Court resident celebrated her birthday with 16 friends and family members, including four great-grandchildren. Mrs Hanson received birthday cards from many high profile names, including the Queen, Prime Minister Bill English, Governor General Patsy Reddy, Labour leader Andrew Little, United Future leader Peter Dunne, and Minister for Seniors, Maggie Barry. This will be the fourth birthday card she has received from the Queen. Mrs Hanson was

born on July 22, 1909, at Wickliffe Bay in Portobello, Dunedin. She grew up with her two brothers and two sisters on a family farm and attended school until age 14. After school, she worked on the farm milking cows, separating milk and thinning turnips. After meeting at a school dance, Gladys married her husband Jack in 1933. They had two daughters Doreen and Joyce. Doreen, who visits her mother most days says Mrs Hanson enjoys simple pleasures. “Watching games shows such as The Chase, reading magazines, colour coordinating her clothes and drinking lemonade during happy hour.” With the help of a walking frame, Gladys is still mobile. “She enjoys taking every day as it comes.”

Warriors deal for teen Keas centre By Gordon Findlater LINWOOD KEAS centre Graeme Patu-Vaega’au will move to Auckland at the end of the year after signing a three-year contact with the Warriors. Patu-Vaega’au, 17, has been with the Keas since a junior and made his debut with the premier team on April 29 against the Riccarton Knights. “He scored an outstanding try in that game and has cemented a spot since then,” said Linwood Keas coach Andrew Auimatagi. It was Patu-Vaega’au’s coach that made the Warriors aware of his talent. Auimatagi also has a role with the NRL club as its South Island talent scout. “He’s always had a pretty good frame and there’s always been something about him,” said Auimatagi. Last year, Auimatagi gave Warriors recruitment and development manager Tony Iro a heads up on Patu-Vaega’au. Iro had a chance to see the young centre earlier this year and he obviously made an impression. The Catholic Cathedral College student’s performances at premier level have also seen him involved in the Canterbury Bulls wider training squad. He is one of three players from Canterbury to secure a contract with the

Roberts grabs gold at schools champs By Andrew King SOMERFIELD’S OISIN Roberts fought his way to a gold medal at the New Zealand secondary schools judo tournament held in Lincoln. Roberts, 17, won the under73kg category during the tournament held on July 15-16 to add to his already impressive tally of medals. “The first thing that went through my head was probably relief that all my fights were over and I had managed to win them all,” Roberts said. In total, he has won two gold and three silver medals during his time competing in national tournaments, as well as a bronze medal in 2015 at the Oceania judo championships. The win allows him to look ahead to bigger and better events, such as the Olympics and Commonwealth Games, which he is

SPORTS keen to compete in. “It would be awesome if I could compete at the Olympics or Commonwealth Games, but I still need to consider whether this is where I want to take my judo and how I would balance this with the rest of my life,” he said. Roberts’ father got him into the sport at an early age and he loved the competitive side of it. “When you get to stand at the top of the podium, that is when you realise that all your hard work was worth it in the end,” he said. “Both my parents and my coach said that I had fought very well and thoroughly deserved the medal. My parents also said that they were very proud of me.”

Tim WraighT and Ché VinCenT - Changing STorieS Both Tim Wraight and Ché Vincent live in the Motueka region in the top of the South Island, an area of diverse landscapes and environments from which to draw inspiration for their work. Tim’s carved wooden work for ‘Changing Stories’ exhibition explores the traditions associated with the reverence given to relics and remains, using the cultural practices of making intricate containers that different cultures fashion to hold these precious objects, Maori wakahuia (treasure boxes) and wakatupapaku (bone boxes) and European reliquaries which held the bones of saints, are the starting point for these pieces. Found remains of creatures and objects from the natural environment in his home area. Tim has constructed stories around fictional and whimsical; taking an object and giving it a new narrative and honouring its previous existence. Ché’s work for this exhibition is formed by his passion for botany and natural processes; exploring the patterns created by plant forms by the way water changes and repeats a flow pattern by decay and renewal. SENIOR LIVING Osteoporosis is a serious condition

GO-Advanced ...but research shows it can be reversed! Omega-PC Fish Oil It is well known how important omega-3 fatty acids are to good health. It is estimated most people don’t even get a third of the recommended omega-3 fatty acids on a weekly basis. Countries with a higher amounts of omega-3 in their diet are known to have lower cardiovascular disease and, in many cases, better overall health. Recent research has shown inflammation to be a big part of disease and the ageing process. Fish oil can help reduce inflammation by providing essential fatty acids required by the body to heal itself and maintain good health. Until now most fish oil only contained omega-3 fatty acids in triglyceride form. Fish, however, naturally contain omega-3 in triglyceride and phospholipid form but until recently the phospholipid form was lost due to the manufacturing process. GO-Advanced Omega-PC sets new standards in fish oil as it contains omega-3 attached to both triglycerides and phospholipids. Studies have shown GO-Advanced Omega-PC to be far better absorbed, leading to increased levels of vital omega-3 fatty acids in the organs thru giving the potential for more health benefits.

Osteoporosis is not taken as a serious condition by most people! Most people don’t realise they have osteoporosis until a fracture happens, as there are usually no signs or symptoms. Fractures can commonly be debilitating with chronic pain and can lead to early mortality. Fractures kill more women than all gynaecological cancers put together and one in six women taken to hospital with a hip fracture, will not come out alive and men fare even worse. Around one in three women and one in twelve men are affected with osteoporosis. The most common osteoporotic fractures are of the wrist, spine, shoulder and hip. Vertebral collapse is a compression fracture and causes back pain often with shooting pains due to compression of the nerves. Multiple vertebral fractures lead to a stooped posture, loss of height and chronic pain with reduced mobility. Hip fractures, in particular, usually require prompt GO-Advanced Omega-PC is produced surgery, as there is a serious risk associated from fresh wild deep sea cold water fish with it of deep vein thrombosis and using a new advanced and more natural pulmonary embolism leading to increased cold extraction process that better preserves the natural nutrient profile found mortality. that is naturally found in your bones has been researched and found in four landmark studies to actually reverse bone loss when sufficient other nutrients are present. One study of 1,649 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis who had had at least one fracture were divided into two groups. Both groups took vitamin D and calcium supplements. One group were also given 680mg/day of strontium. After the three year study the strontium group showed an unheard of average bone growth of 8.1%. This study shows that osteoporosis can not only be halted but may even be reversed and without the side effects of common osteoporosis drugs. BREAKTHROUGH AGAINST OSTEOPOROSIS Osteoporosis, the weakening of the bone is a serious health threat that often leads to severe pain, fractures & early mortality. Research has found the bones can be re-mineralised & strengthened when the required nutrients are present. Minerals calcium, magnesium & vitamins D3 & K2 are essential but are not enough in many cases. A missing link appears to be the mineral strontium. Research shows strontium to positively affect bone density. - Supports strong healthy bones, teeth & nails - Is a naturally occurring mineral often lacking in the modern diet - Found in healthy bones & teeth but lacking in people with osteoporosis

HOME & HEATING

Choosing the right heat pump for your home

Whether it be a new build, or a retrofit, most homes include at least one heat pump, if not a whole heating solution. They can provide cheap, clean heat and are much more convenient than a log burner as you just need to press a button. But how do you decide what is best? Choosing the right sized heat pump is key to ensuring optimum comfort levels. Every situation varies and it is therefore important to get professional advice from heat pump experts. The range varies from wall mounted high walls, floor mounted systems, multi systems, ceiling cassettes, right through to ducted central heating systems allowing you to have a very discreet way of heating your whole home to a constant temperature throughout. Firstly, you must select a heat pump that is suitable for the size of the space you wish to heat. Usually a site visit is the best way to ascertain this. Not only is the size of the area taken into consideration but also, insulation, building orientation, windows and ceiling space. There are a wide range of heat pumps available with different heating outputs so it is important to select the correct size for your requirements that will handle the job but not be unnecessarily overpowered. Secondly, the location of your heat pump is also extremely important. The cheapest installation is a back to back where the outdoor unit is positioned directly behind the indoor unit however this is not necessarily always the best option. It is vital that the indoor unit is positioned in a place that will not be

constantly blowing on you. Also important, is the location of the outdoor unit. Most people do not want their outdoor unit sitting directly in their outdoor entertaining area or right outside their bedroom window. Choose a brand you can trust. Many brands have come and gone over the years but there are a number of manufacturers who provide reputable and reliable products. All brands vary in their energy efficiency, quietness of systems and price, so it depends on your application as to which will be most suitable. Major brands such as Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Toshiba and Hitachi are all reliable brands backed up by good technical after sales service. Ensure your heat pump is installed by an accredited installer. This will not only ensure correct installation of your heat pump, but also validate the manufacturers warranty. Other things to consider when choosing a heat pump are time clocks, ease of use of the remote controllers, air filtration and also wifi capabilities. Heating is a major investment in your home and it is vital to get the right advice. Enviro Master Ltd specialise in the supply, installation and servicing of all major brands of heat pumps. Our salesmen are engineers ensuring you get quality, unbiased advice as to which system will suit your application the best. Enviro Master Ltd offer a free, no obligation quote and will come to your home to see what is required. Visit our website at www.enviromaster.co.nz.

The facts about home ventilation Balanced Pressure vs Positive Pressure Under the New Zealand Building Code, all buildings, including residential, need to be suitably ventilated, either with opening windows or forced ventilation. Clause G4.1 states: “The objective of this provision is to safeguard people from illness or loss of amenity due to lack of fresh air.” There are many benefits to forced, or mechanical, ventilation over opening windows, including warmth, security, reduction of outside noises and reduction of condensation. Traditional domestic ventilation systems are ‘positive pressure’. They bring air in from outside via the roof space and force the stale air out through gaps around windows and doors. The incoming air from these systems has to be heated or cooled to keep the house warm in winter or cool in summer. The Smooth-Air HEX390 is a ‘balanced pressure’ system. It extracts air from the house and at the same time brings in fresh air. These two streams of air pass through a heat exchanger, which warms incoming air in winter and cools in summer if air conditioning is being used. This means that up to 80% of the energy which would be

ve Remo ells ng sm i k o o c am! e t s d an

wasted using a traditional positive pressure system is recovered, resulting in significant energy savings and therefore lower heating or cooling costs. Until recently, balanced pressure ventilation systems have been considerably more expensive than traditional positive pressure systems. However, with Smooth-Air’s unique manufacturing capabilities, a HEX390 balanced pressure system can be installed for a similar price as a traditional positive pressure system.
